He has been talking to us off an on about being a Christian and getting baptized, but Matthew and I just kept thinking he was too young to really understand, so we would answer his questions but not go much farther than that. He would also make comments referring to himself as a Christian. Around Christmas, he randomly told both Matthew and I that he had asked Jesus into his heart. We really didn't know how to respond to that, because it was something so very important and we didn't want to handle it the wrong way. Again, we knew that he knew what it meant to follow Jesus, and all about sin, and of course what 5 year old doesn't want to go to heaven instead of hell? But, at the same time he was only 5! Because of these things, we still were not sure he was old enough to really understand the magnitude of what he was saying. We prayed, and prayed, and prayed about it and asked God to give us discernment. Therefore, on this night, we knew in our hearts it was real and God was dealing with him.
The day he became saved was a busy night. We were one week from bringing Abigail into the world and packing up everything in our house so we could move to a new house while our house was being remodeled. Matthew and I were working like crazy and Sumner and Anna Ruth were doing their own thing when out of the blue, Sumner came out of his room and told us again, that he said a prayer and asked Jesus into his heart. Matthew immediately stopped what he was doing, took Sumner into our bedroom and talked to him for a long time about this very important decision. Matthew said he knew in his heart it really was God dealing with Sumner's heart, and that Sumner knew an understood what he was saying and doing. Afterwards, Matthew led Sumner in the sinner's prayer. We all rejoiced together and we told Sumner that as much as we were rejoicing, the angels in heaven were rejoicing even more! Matthew called our preacher a few days later and set up a time for us to go talk to him. Again, we were a little concerned about how young Sumner was. We met with our pastor, Brother Fred Evers (Northside Baptist Church) on Wednesday afternoon. Brother Fred asked Sumner a lot of deep questions and at the end of it all told us he had absolutely no doubt that Sumner is saved! Praise the Lord! There is no better peace that knowing my precious little boy will live for eternity in heaven one day. I pray God will continue to help Sumner grow in his faith and will seek and follow God's will for his life.
Baptism
Sumner was baptised on February 3, 2019 at Northside Baptist Church by Fred Evers. It was a special day for all of us, but especially Sumner. Many of our family members and close friends came. Afterwards we went out to eat lunch with everyone at 41 and Main. It was a special day, and I hope Sumner will always remember it.
1 Year Birthday
One year after Sumner asked Jesus into his heart, we had a birthday party. A Bible Study teacher of mine, Sherry Lyles, told me she always had birthday celebrations every year to celebrate the day all of her children were saved. I am so thankful she shared that with me, so I could do it with my own children. So one year later we had Sumner a little party. He was not expecting it at all! He woke up to a birthday sign, cupcakes, a new Bible, and a Bible case. We all sang happy birthday! I plan to have these little celebrations every year because it truly is the greatest thing of all!
